Duncan Jones, Director

Duncan Jones is the director of the movie Source Code.  Born in England in 1971, he went to school for advertising and philosophy.  He made his first debut as a noted director at the age of 38.  He has worked for numerous other directors and did many side projects before making it big.  His best known movies are Source Code and Moon.

Analysis of Colter Stevens

Colter Stevens is the main character in Source Code.  His character is a confused one in the beginning.  Handed the sudden task of saving the whole city of Chicago, he is at first weary of the information he is given.  After realizing that this was a real mission, he quickly becomes determined to succeed in this.  Colter is clearly a man with a strong drive and great bravery.  Further into the movie, Colter develops feelings for a woman on the train, with whom he had just met.  Suddenly, love becomes a motivation for the completion of this mission.  In conclusion, Colter is a deeply motivated, brave, and loving young man, who will stop at nothing to save his love and his people. 

Setting Analysis

This story is set in present day America.  The story takes place on a train heading to Chicago and also in an unknown military area.  The atmosphere in the movie is somewhat a dark one.  The whole time, the viewer is on the edge of their seat, hoping for a moment of relief.  The atmosphere in the train is one that is slightly lighter than that of the unknown military capsule, that we are later informed in just a place that Stevens imagines.  This lets us know, that Stevens must be in a dark place in his life, and that is shown when he discusses the issues he has with his father.

Plot Summary

  The story starts out with a decorated military man named, Colter Stevens, waking up in an unknown area.  He informed that he has been placed in something called Source Code, and has a mission to relive 8 minutes in the life of another man who was on a train that blew up that morning near Chicago.  The purpose of Colter going back, is to find out who the bomber is, so that he may inform the military and stop and supposed future bombing that is supposed to hit the largely populated town of Chicago.  Stevens takes  many tries going back and fourth trying to succeed in his mission.  Through out the story, he falls in love with a woman on the train.  Before completing his mission, Stevens is informed that he is actually dead, and asks that if he completes the mission, that they just let him die.  After agreeing to his circumstances, he goes in another time and finally completes the mission.  The man leading Source Code decides not to follow through on the agreement, and the Woman, Colleen, who has been talking Stevens though the mission goes against his wishes and kills Stevens, only after letting Stevens back into the 8 minute world where he continues he life.  Because of this, the first bombing never happened, and the movie ends with the maker of the Source Code complaining that the bomber was stopped and he did not get to experiment with it, unaware of everything that had happened.

Proposal

 Source Code is a movie currently in theaters that has greatly sparked my attention.  I chose this topic because it was an interesting subject.  It focuses on giving on the ability to figure out the past and possibly change the future because of it.  It appeals to me so much, not only because there are things I wish I could change, but also because of the military involvement.  I know many people and have a few family members who have served or are currently serving our country.
